Petroleum is defined as a liquid consisting mainly of hydrocarbons and low percentages of nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur, all these components have been gathered in the ground for thousands of years, and due to natural factors such as fractions, landslides and cracks, Or by man by drilling oil wells,it appears on the surface of the earth.
Petroleum has several conditions either solid state or semi-solid condition such as asphalt , in addition to being in a liquid state such as crude oil, and gaseous condition.
The degree of boiling of petroleum products is different from each other. Each hydrocarbon has a boiling point different from the other and increases as the carbon atoms in the compound increase.
This is the basis of refining operations to separate components from each other, including heating or distillation to separate gas compounds and then liquid compounds and solid compounds.
Gasoline evaporates at a temperature of 50-200 , kerosene evaporates at 150-315, Diesel evaporates at a temperature between 180-350 , light oils evaporate between 350-420 and heavy oils evaporate between 420-490.
Importance of petroleum
The importance of oil is in the exploration and refining operations and the extraction and transport in addition to marketing operations. High-value oil products are fuel oil and gasoline (automotive fuel).
Petroleum is the raw material of many chemical products such as medicines, fertilizers, pesticides, solvents and plastics. Oil is important in many industries and industrial civilization.
Oil is also important for being responsible for global energy consumption, where it is consumed in South and Central America by (44%) , in Africa by 41% and in North America by (40%), where the world consumes thirty billion barrels of oil per year.
The developed countries are the most consuming oil, where the United States consumed oil (about 25%) of oil production in 2007.Oil is important from the global economic point of view, where in they used to use whale oil in the lighting, coal and wood in heating during the nineteenth century, because of the industrial revolution, this led to the search for other sources such as petroleum.
It is important to be a major source in many uses summarized by the following:
Used in transport, communication, production of mineral oils, candles and so on.
Is an important source in petrochemical industries.
Petroleum is one of the most important and cleanest sources of energy when compared to nuclear fuel and coal.
Oil is used into the plastics, synthetic, fibers and dyes industries.
The importance of petroleum lies in the ease of its storage and transport.
It is important in many modern and sophisticated industries.
